Reiki

What is Reiki

Reiki is an invisible, gentle energy that works by balancing a persons' energy system, promoting the body's own natural ability to heal, on any level. A qualified Reiki practitioner channels this energy into a client in order to promote health and well-being and initiate repair processes where required.


A Reiki treatment is very relaxing and often clients experience pleasant sensations such as heat, tingling and seeing colours, an indication that the energy is travelling through the body.

Reiki encourages and supports positive personal choices such as improving diet, taking more exercise, devoting time for rest or leisure activities and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco.  Reiki’s gentle energy is safe and adaptable to most medical conditions including children, the elderly and people recovering from surgery.

Reiki was rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui in some Sanskrit writings which were 2500 years old. He found them after he had studied Christianity, Buddhism and old Japanese writings, travelling widely in his search. To activate the power, Mikao Usui spent many months meditating until he found a way to channel this energy and pass it on to others.


Reiki was brought to the West in the late 1930’s by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American living in Hawaii. Now Reiki has spread to every country in the World. People from all walks of life and from all religious beliefs practice Reiki. It is the simplicity of Reiki that attracts. Reiki is primarily for a means of self-healing, also as a path for personal growth and transformation.

Reiki is one of many techniques that utilises the concept of energy. In China they call this energy 'Chi' and it is at the heart of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In India they call the energy 'Prana' and it is used in Yoga and breathing techniques. The Japanese refer to the energy as 'Ki' and as well as Reiki it is the basis of Shiatsu massage. Interestingly in Eastern cultures the concept of energy and self - healing techniques have been around for thousands of years.


These days more and more people are turning to Reiki and other complementary therapies to increase their well being and peace of mind. Taking responsibility for our own wellness, recognising our own abilities to help ourselves rather than constantly looking outside of ourselves for the answer to our happiness and health.

How Reiki works

Coping with any sort of emotional or physical pain or illness can be a time of great stress. Reiki may help you; relax, reduce stress, anxiety or depression, manage pain and emotions, improve sleep, provide comfort and peace, recover from illness, surgery including chemotherapy and radiation treatment, increase self awareness and intuition, improve your own natural healing abilities and giving inner strength to deal with life’s challenges.


It can be an effective method of maintaining a balanced well-being, working gently and effectively on many levels.  Helping to release emotional, mental and psychic blocks which may be causing physical symptoms.  Working on the causal level of illness, balancing energies and cleansing toxins and can be an effective method of stress-release.


Reiki is a perfectly safe and completely natural method of healing and works in harmony with other holistic and medical practices, helping to support those undergoing conventional medical treatment.

History of Reiki 
How often should I have Reiki

During a treatment, which lasts approximately 45-50 mins, you will lie fully clothed and relaxed on a massage table whilst soothing and relaxing music is played.  Reiki energy is then directed to specific points in the body through the Reiki practitioners hands. At the end of the session it is typical to feel relaxed and maybe a little sleepy. It is not uncommon for some to drift off or even feel a little tearful at the end of a session, especially if you have been suffering from stress or anxiety. This is entirely natural as Reiki helps alleviate and release stress blockages and is part of the process of getting the mind and body back in balance.

What to expect during a Reiki Session

All of us are entirely unique and individual and so it depends on your own personal state and wellbeing, including the reasons for wanting Reiki. Some clients just have one or two sessions to help with stress or improve their emotional positivity or centre of peace within themselves, while others wish for a longer course of therapy to help with long term ailments or concerns. As part of your Reiki treatment a consultation is always carried out prior to understand fully your needs and wishes.      


There is no down side to Reiki, at the very basic level it will give you a sense of tranquility relaxation and calm and help you cope with the stresses of everyday life. A precious relaxing moment to help restore your mind and body back in balance. Many of my clients have learnt the importance of prevention over cure including the importance of precious ‘me’ time and so enjoy the benefits of this wonderful energy at least once a month.
